Steve Inskeep on Morning Edition this morning: "Today is the birthday of Nancy Cartwright, the voice of Bart [Simpson]. She is 47 years old." 02:58PM «
The AP has a story up about Chief Justice Rehnquist's hospitalization for thyroid cancer over the weekend.
Rehnquist underwent a tracheotomy at Bethesda Naval Hospital in suburban Maryland on Saturday, the court's announcement said. It added he expects to be back at work next week when the court will next be in session.
Here's the complete text of the Court's announcement. I really wouldn't have thought it possible that a person could undergo a tracheotomy and be back at work after eight days.
The election has finally begun to completely stress me out, but I can't help wondering if expediency would have buried his diagnosis until after the election, had he not needed an invasive medical procedure.
Best of luck to the dangerous old coot. 10:22AM «

Supporting a baseball team with a $180 million-dollar-plus payroll is like betting that water will flow downhill. I just don't understand why it's fun for anyone except George Steinbrenner, and I'm immensely gratified that the last three games haven't been much fun for him at all. Game seven starts presently. Go Sox. 05:24PM «

I learned today that Julia Child's last meal was French onion soup.
Her death was very sad. Julia Child was sort of like my Fred Rogers. I was disappointed that her closest modern heir, noting her passage on his garishly colored blog, perpetuated the chicken-dropping anecdote that she firmly denied ever happened.
Better to remember her with this remarkable New Yorker profile from 1976. Or perhaps with a nice French onion soup -- I was startled to find that her recipe calls for "grated swiss or parmesan" instead of gruyere. 07:19PM «
