Any lingering nausea over the Adobe's announced acquisition of Macromedia will not be ameliorated by reading the companies' FAQ on the subject (adding insult to injury, it's in PDF). The parts that aren't meaningless twaddle are cheerful lies:
Q: Are there areas of duplication in product lines? If so, how will that be addressed?
A: Adobe and Macromedia are committed to serving the needs of our combined customers. The companies are largely complementary, and thus the amount of competition between us is limited. Post closing, we believe the industry will remain as dynamic and competitive as it is today. Until the close of transaction, the companies will continue to operate business and [sic] usual.
"The amount of competition between us is limited" -- you know, it's just Illustrator vs Freehand, and Dreamweaver vs GoLive, and Flash vs SVG, and Fireworks vs ImageReady. The fact that Macromedia doesn't have an Acrobat and Adobe doesn't have a ColdFusion will ostensibly give our gutless regulators the fig leaf they need to seal the deal.
I'm still looking for even one solitary advantage to this deal that applies to any customer of either company, or anyone else who's not a stockholder. 10:33AM «
