I was getting ready to respond with a kinder, gentler, RTFM, but I couldn't 
find any trace of what I was looking for in CPAN: I was *sure* there was a 
module encapsulating file(1) and /etc/magic.  But a WAIT search for 'magic' 
in synopsis and text turned up nothing.  Have I missed it, or is this an 
opportunity for some bright programmer to make a contribution?
