AHA!  A perl analog to the "rm -r * ~" Unix gotcha...
                                   ^ whoops on that space...

I had a similar problem, although not quite as disastrous, in trying to 
open a file for reading and writing, and learning [the hard way] the 
difference between "+<NAME" and "+>NAME" :o)
