Very good advice, definitely the way to go in a production
environment...

I got stung by several REs that did what they should do in
5.00404 but stopped matching with 5.00502 or went into infinite
loops (with /g).

I must admit these REs were broken in a subtle way that I only
learned to understand when I read the Owl Tome of Regexp Windom.

You'd have to post an example to make me believe that. In my
opinion, the perl developers kept a very sharp eye on existing
semantics and interfaces, only extending existing things,
seldom changing or adjusting semantics, never changing interfaces.
The new Regexp engine in 5.005 was the one big exception.
