well, i got the good news from gnat that my proposal for a perl golf tournament at tpc4 has been accepted. he has already designated a TPC4 overseer who is beating me to death with his wit and wisdom, damian conway. i am looking for a few good perl hackers to help in organizing this contest. my goal is to make it truly fun and exciting for both participants and audience members. damian and i are flaming each other with ideas so this is not set in concrete. we will need many small perl tasks/problems for use as the golf holes so even if you are not on the this committee you can help out. i posted here first (and maybe the only place) since this is a totally fun with perl idea. here is a loose description of the structure i have envisioned: there will be multiple teams (up to 10) with 1-4 players and a designated captain. each hole will be presented to all teams (and the audience on a big screen) at one time. it will be a short perl problem which is to be solved with the shortest perl code possible. there will be a time limit (2-3 minutes) for each hole. each team will submit one answer (probably on paper as getting multiple computers set up correctly is problematical as demonstrated by the death bowl last year) and the order of submissions will be recorded. scoring per hole is done on 3 criteria. 1. 1 point if your answer is correct. 2. bonus points (3, 2, and 1) for the teams that return a working answer the soonest. 3. bonus points (also 3, 2 and 1) for the shortest working code (we may skip counting white space). 4. bonus points if you beat the judges shortest answer. we will create a script that can take answer code, run it and test for correct results and score based on shortness, and submitted order. this will be run by a panel of judges who will type in answers. this is one area i want strong help with. i don't want any glitches when this is live. there may be some extra bonus points on coolness and one hole may be perl poetry where bonus points are added for the best poetry (working answers only). some holes may have restrictions or requirements such as you must use splice or you can't use certain functions or keywords. consider them as sandtraps or windmills. :) some holes may have small bonus prizes awarded while the best total scoring teams will get the bigger prizes. on the big screens we will show scores per hole, total scores and some of the selected answers as well as the best one the judges created. there is more than this already thought out but i don't want to flood the list with all of it. so if you are interested in helping design the tournament, write hole problems, or help out in any way email me directly. thanx, uri -- Uri Guttman --------- uri@sysarch.com ---------- http://www.sysarch.com SYStems ARCHitecture, Software Engineering, Perl, Internet, UNIX Consulting The Perl Books Page ----------- http://www.sysarch.com/cgi-bin/perl_books The Best Search Engine on the Net ---------- http://www.northernlight.com ==== Want to unsubscribe from Fun With Perl?
