The reason I wrote the subroutine this way was because I was working with
a generic algorithm (i.e. I wasn't making use of lanuage-specific
constructs, etc.).  I knew map() would make my solution more like Perl and
less like C, but I understood my implementation well enough to explain it.

I don't know how easy a time my professor will have with mine, and I doubt
it would be any easier with the map { map { ... } ... } ... solutions. :)
