Put a file named .AppleVolumes in the user's home directory, and the list
of volumes specified in that file will be available in the Chooser and the
Network Browser. Syntax like in AppleVolumes.system.

That's completely unrelated to netatalk (and to MacPerl...). Check that the
file inetd.conf specifies that your Linux box should do telnet on port 23.
Try to open a telnet session to the Linux box'  IP number. The name won't
work unless you have a DNS server in your LAN.
