Here goes. I wrote a Unix Perl script recently which extracted log file entries within a time frame based on user-defined parameters. The script worked fine on a rather large log file for the first run. Later, I streamlined the script and combined an additional feature or two at my manager's request. Suddenly, the script was no longer writing the results of it's findings to my external file. I verified that the loop was identical to the working script. I even had it print the log line contents to the prompt. I was getting results alright, but it refused to write to an external file. All file names and handles were verified. Permissions were verified. I then had a few of the more seasoned Perl programmers have a look, and they didn't have a clue either. We even tried piping the results directly to an external file to no avail. Well... it then occurred to someone that there was something wrong with the source file, so I ran the troubled script on a different log file, and all was fine! Has anyone ever encountered this? The script could read from the log file, print the results out to the prompt, but not to an external file. Neither I nor any of the sharp minds I'm lucky to work with could explain this. Please feel free to shed some light if you can.
