Some, but not all, of this stuff is documented in Chapter 3
of O'Reilly's Advanced Perl Programming, especially the
section on Typeglobs and References starting on p. 47.  I
didn't see anything in there specifically about
*FOO=*DATA{IO}.  This chapter also has a nice discussion of
the difference between local and my.
