[MacPerl-Forum] origin of 'populating a hash'

I've been writing some code that, among other things, populates a hash.

I started to wonder about that particular turn of phrase, and whence it came...

Does anyone know?  Is it a Camelism, or does it have origins before that?
I mean, I could understand filling a hash, or a bunch of other things.  But
populate?
