I would only add one item to Bruce Van Allen's "minimum":

Make sure you have a mac with a PCI bus.  I think the
7500 and 7600 that he mentioned qualify.  This doesn't
really matter for MacPerl, but I have an older mac clone
with NuBus and that's limited some other things I would
like to do with it.
