It makes some sense.  The problem is in Perl 5.004.  I was basing my 
comments on  the testing I've done for HTML::Parser 
<http://testers.cpan.org/search?request=dist&dist=HTML-Parser>, where 
I use the latest 5.004, 5.004_05.  MacPerl is based on an earlier 
version of 5.004.  I don't remember what exactly causes the problem, 
but it's definitely due to a difference between the way 5.004 and 
5.005 does things.
