In Regards to your letter <v01510101ad0b84078fbb@[206.43.170.33]>: > >>As the world has not yet fully realized, the Internet's WWW is now > >>in _great_ measure _driven_ by Perl! > > > >Hardly,.... driven by Netscape, maybe... but not by Perl. > > Well, more so than is obvious. Netscape certainly makes more noise, but > most cgis are written in Perl (in case you're not sure, cgis are programs > that generate html on the fly). I _really_ hate myself for perpetuating this thread, but I must explain what is not obvious. The CGI's that perl drives are very large in number indeed. In fact, I have seen several books now that explain writing CGI's _in_perl_ as if there were no other way to write them. HOWEVER, there is _much_ more going on behind the scenes. If you look into must of the "non-static" services, such as Cottage Net, the VRCorp Job Database, and many others, the databases that are driving the site are built, maintained, filtered, searched, etc. by perl scripts. Many people use perl to verify links in their hierarchies. Perl is used to automatically generate entire html trees from meta-languages. The list goes on. In other words, NetScape could disappear tomorrow, and few people would notice. But if perl disappeared, there would be a collective moan. tim. time@ice.com (UUCP: heifetz!tbomb!time) USENET - a slow moving self parody... ph
