[MacPerl] email in CGIs

I am wondering if there is any way to speed up CGI scripts that include
email being sent.

I find that MacPerl is pretty fast when it comes to normal script handeling
but when I added a mail message sent to someone using sockets the return
time for the script jumped from 2-3 seconds to 13-15 seconds. Has anybody
else experienced this problem. I have not had that great of a time jump
when programing a UNIX box.

Is there a way to make a MacPerl cgi return information to WebStar before
it calls a subroutine to email a summary message about what the script has
done? Is this slowness of email handling in perl just something I have to
live with on the Mac or is there a work around I am missing? Would C,
AppleScript or some other language accelerate the process? Is there a way
to return to Web Star by starting another perl script, so the original
returns and WebStar will send back the script results?

A perl lover turned mac webmaster in distress,

Nick
