[MacPerl] Calling MPW command from MacPerl

Primary question: How to call MPW commands
from MacPerl. 

An AppleScript Tell isn't getting me any
responses. I can start the application, but
the commands I send appear to end up in a null
bit bucket, so to speak.

2nd question: I am trying to find where
applications/files live on the Mac and was 
hoping to use the MPW whereis command, but 
perhaps there is better/different solution.

I currently muck with UserStartup witch will 
then call MPW commands when I start the Shell
but this a pretty ugly answer IMHO.
