[MacPerl] CGI or ACGI? - bottlenecked Web server

Hello all. I've got a serious of Web pages that launch a variety of CGI
scripts written in MacPerl. It seems that when one of these CGI scripts is
running, it takes the whole system's attention and does not let the WebSTAR
server send other pages and does not let other scripts run at the same
time.

Would it make any difference if these were ACGI scripts? Someplace I saw
that the "a" meant asynchronous. If this is true, does renaming the script
simply change the way it behaves? Would this prevent the apparent
bottlenecking of the system? Would ACGI scripts interfere with one another?

Any other suggestions for speeding up the processing of the scripts? Is
there a way to spin off processes, such as the generation of a GIF file
with GD, that could help?
