[MacPerl] calling other programs

I've been trying to figure out how to call other programs from within my 
perl scripts. The 'system', 'exec', and backquote commands don't seem to 
work on the mac. Is there any way to do it without using AppleScript within my 
perl script?

I've looked around a lot and can't seem to find any information. Any help 
would be much appreciated. Thanks.
