There's a great freeware Drag/Drop app that you can use for this called ICFileDiverter. If you just drag the files on the applet, it'll open them in the appropriate app. according to IC. If you hold down the option key when dropping, it'll automagically change the type/creator codes for you. You shouldn't have a hard time setting up a script to do this for you (external to the ones that you're saying you don't want to make Mac-specific, of course) by watching a folder or what-have-you.
