There does seem to be a problem with AppleEvents, Menus and OSA. GD also I see -- I hadn't tried that. For the moment I have banned CFM-68K and friends from the system and gone back to 5.1.3r2. It turned out I hadn't got enough room on this machine, and some other problems arose which I suspect may have had something to do with CFM. Anyway having got rid of it and run Norton things are back to normal.
