The freeware way is  the combination of suntar and MacGZip
(<http://persephone.cps.unizar.es/general/gente/spd/gzip/gzip.html>), both
available from Info-Mac.  The payware way is Stuffit Deluxe, where you drop
the .tar.gz on Stuffit Expander and, thanks to Deluxe's Expander Enhancer,
everything gets unpacked automatically.  For either to work, of course, you
need to be sure that you transfer the .tar.gz in plain binary mode.  Make
sure whatever you're using to do the transfer is set up that way.
