In general I don't usually make an announcement on the list when I put a new package on mors, but a lot of things have changed this week. libnet-1.0602, libwww-perl-5.16, and MailTools-1.1002 are now available in <ftp://mors.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/MacPerl/Scripts/>. The libnet and libwww ports are the full package, and these should not be used to upgrade the libnet and libwww in the :MacPerl Ä:lib: of a current MacPerl 5.15r4 distribution (libwww-perl-5.13 and libnet-1.0505), because Matthias' changes are not included yet. Instead, in <ftp://mors.gsfc.nasa.gov/pub/MacPerl/Scripts/Beta/> you'll find the updaters. They're in the Beta folder only because this is new and untried (well, *I've* tried it and maybe Chris Nandor has, but no one else that I'm aware of). If you're paranoid, like me, you'll make a backup of your lib folder before running the updaters. But since the software is a light hack of the reliable ExtUtils::Install of the standard Perl distribution, nothing should go wrong. Up until a few weeks ago I would have just used ExtUtils::Install, but then libnet-1.06 and 1.0601 came out and I had to "make uninstall" several times on my Sun, which made me realize that there had to be a way to quickly undo what was done by the installer. To use the installers, unpack them and double click the "Macfile.PL" droplet. (This stupid joke will probably disappear in the future in favor of something like "Install", but I couldn't resist just this once.) It will ask you what folder you want to update, giving you it's best guess as to where your MacPerl lib folder is. Make sure it's right, then click OK. (If you want to install somewhere else, make sure you type the full path to the folder that *contains* LWP.pm, or the folder that *contains* the Net folder in the case of libnet). The installer will run and replace the files that need to be updated. If you ever need to reinstall the old version, keep the updater folder intact and simply double click on "Macfile.PL" again, and it will do just that. (It doesn't actually deinstall the new version, because it makes no attempt to track down any brand new files or folders and delete them. But by definition the old version didn't need these, so everything should be fine.) All the new files (and *only* changed files) are in the blib folder when you unpack the installer, just in case you've made you're own changes to libnet or libwww and you need to see whether you have to rescue anything before updating. A revision of Mac::Conversions (cosmetic changes only) will appear tomorrow, and I'm going to update most of my personal scripts that are on mors tomorrow, since a lot of them are seriously behind what I actually use. --- Paul J.
