Back in 1975 or so, I wrote up a quick and dirty sort utility for a CDC 3800 running "Drum Scope". The sort was implemented in Fortran and passed pairs of records to a user-defined comparison function. I had to work hard to convince my boss that we needed it, but he soon realized that it was a pretty handy utility. On the other hand, I never did convince anyone of the value of using database systems...
