I don't know if it meets your definition of "simple", but you can use Net::SMTP to actually send mail, or use MailTool's Mail::Internet::smtpsend() for a way to get some of the headers constructed for you. Perl scripts tend to use sendmail both because their authors assume it's always available (bad assumption, even on a Unix machine), and because it "helpfully" fills in many headers the best it can.
