} Archive::Tar should work, no? Maybe someday soon Compress::Zlib might be
} fully functional for MacPerl, too.

It will work for extraction, but not for creation, at least not in a
reasonable way. It doesn't know about Mac paths yet, so it won't do the
right thing with them (where the right thing is defined as producing an
archive that will reproduce the original tree on another platform). Making
it do the right thing and submitting a patch to the author has been on my
todo list for a while, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. It would be
easy; split the paths into parts, encode the /'s, create a pseudo-Unix path
for the file. There may be other gotcha's in there, too, but I don't
remember seeing any show stoppers.
