More Mac relevant than MacPerl relevant but a good thing to remember: > Peter Hartmann (hartmann@mbox.kyoto-inet.or.jp) wrote: > > >I could solve this problem by increasing the memory partition of the >applet > >in the Finder: As a general rule with Mac apps, if you think something should work, and you swear it worked before (in the previous version, or with fewer items, or the last time you ran it), try increasing the memory partition. Memory requirements tend to decrease if Virtual memory is on (VM is quite stable in MacOS 8.0). Mac apps grab a set amount of memory when they launch and never ask for more. They also (often) do not complain about memory being low, they just fail to perform the desired function and often fail silently. And sometimes (gasp) there is a memory leak and an app that had plenty of memory when launched will gradulay use it up over time. This causes weird behaviour in apps you leave open all day, such as mail clients, editors, browsers... Also keep in mind that any memory increase will no longer be in effect if you install a newer version! (It sounds obvious but it's easy to forget). There are some very nice memory trackers available as freeware or shareware, as well as the classic "About this computer" dialog. If you've got the memory, use it. --- Vicki Brown, vlb@cfcl.com |\ _,,,---,,_ Journeyman Sourceror ZZZzz /,`.-'`' -. ;-;;,_ Scripts & Philtres |,4- ) )-,_. ,\ ( `'-' http://www.cfcl.com/~vlb '---''(_/--' `-'\_) P.O.
