Sheer convenience. You really wouldn't rather

cpan> install WhizBang::Module

and have *everything* done? It downloads, unpacks, makes (including any
compiling that's necessary, and automatic autosplit), tests, and installs
everything in its proper place.

I only wish CPAN worked under MacPerl.
