Well, the original programmer gets the last word, so in spite of 
everything, he says:

and then:

I've taken the some 30-odd responses to my original query, and compiled 
them into single file for reference purposes (a lot of very good idea 
there!).  I'll be back often with questions, and possibly even code 
snippets.  When it comes time to throw away the prototype, what do 
readers of this list think of my perhaps recycling the better parts of it 
to the archives?  Some of the code snippets may even be useful.
