[MacPerl] CommConnect problem

I have several IIfx's running system 7.1,I was hoping to peek at the 
trackic that is going through the serial port.  I get the following 
errors when I try to use CommConnect:

Error: unable to prepare for use (InitCM error).
Error: CommConnect was not prepared for use.

I think it is because 7.1 was running and the comm. toolbox has changed 
since then.  Is there away around this?  And no, I can't upgrade to 7.5, 
7.6 or 8.0.
