Also, StuffIt relies on some simple hueristic on file content for selecting a decompression method. (based on my experience) OK thanks a lot. I have MacGzip (and I have even found it useful on occasion:) Apparently the Stuffit option was the program that I was looking for. I have Stuffit Expander installed but apparently I will need to spend US$30.00 to install "Dropstuff with Expander Enhancer" because Stuffit alone would not unpack my tar file. I wound up using Craig Ruff && John Gilmore's public domain tar to unpack the tar file I had. It seems as though there is a freeware path and a shareware path for folks to follow on this problem with the freeware path requiring two separate programs and being a bit more tedious to follow (yes I am aware of the Archive::Tar module on CPAN but was concerned about the bootstrap problem, and I have not used it on a Mac (yet)). For the record the tar program that I used was: http://www.umich.edu/~archive/mac/util/compression/tar4.0b.sit.hqx Thanks again to Xah Lee and Jay Bedsole.
