[MacPerl] MacPerl Mini-FAQ (updated 981012)

MacPerl Mini-FAQ (updated 981110)
=================================

This Mini-FAQ is posted on an occasional basis to the MacPerl email list.
It is not intended to be comprehensive. Rather, it is intended as a
starting point and a convenient place to put advice, pointers, etc.

What is MacPerl?
----------------

MacPerl is a port of Perl 5 (http://www.perl.com) to the Macintosh OS.
MacPerl runs on most Macintosh systems, including clones. There are
versions for Motorola 680XX and PowerPC CPUs, using both the Finder and
MPW (http://developer.apple.com/dev/tools/mpw-tools/about_mpw.html).

With the exception of a few Unix-specific and/or multitasking features,
MacPerl supports nearly all of Perl 5. In addition, MacPerl provides a
variety of Mac-specific features, including access to Apple Events,
AppleScript interaction, AppleTalk, and many Mac OS Toolbox routines.

MacPerl is "Open Source" software, freely redistributable in both source
and binary form. See the license text for details. The MacPerl port is
the work of Matthias Neeracher (mailto:neeri@iis.ee.ethz.ch).

MacPerl Resources
-----------------

MacPerl has an active email list, an introductory/reference book, and a
variety of FTP and WWW sites. Your best starting point, in general, will
be the MacPerl Pages (http://www.ptf.com/macperl), a central repository
of MacPerl information, pointers, etc.

The MacPerl email list is moderated by Matthias Neeracher, who requests
(and will enforce!) both civility and a reasonable amount of relevance to
MacPerl. To join, visit http://www.ptf.com/macperl/depts/mlist.html or
email to mailto:macperl-request@iis.ee.ethz.ch, using the message body:

MacPerl Advocacy
----------------

Although MacPerl has been around for several years, it has only recently
begun to attract attention in the Mac community. You can help the cause
by adopting any (or all!) of these "guerrilla promotion" techniques:

  * mention MacPerl to your friends, co-workers, etc.
  * promote MacPerl on Usenet groups, email lists, etc.
  * display the "MacPerl used here" banner on your web site
