At the same time, the number of subscribers has fallen to 678, considerably
lower than it used to be (Although another 185 are on the announce list).

At the risk of annoying Vicki a bit, I don't believe that these two trends are
quite unrelated. In the long term, higher list traffic makes more subscribers
question whether the effort to keep up with the list is worthwhile.

The increase in traffic is due partially to the expansion of list activity in
several directions: There are more people involved with porting modules and
writing XS code, which is a great thing. However, part of the traffic comes
from fairly irrelevant discussions ("Looking at MacOS X" alone accounts for
10% of the messages in the last ten days without, I believe, a commensurable
gain in information, enlightenment, or happiness).

Once the new mailing list infrastructure is in place, some specialization of
the list and especially the introduction of digest possibilities should
ease the emigration pressure considerably, but for the time being, I'd like to
appeal to your self discipline and good sense when using the list.
