I am looking for somebody who is willing to test a very mysterious case of a MacPerl crash. It took me an extremly long period of time to narrow things down, since it originally was a script that was sent by AE from a RealBasic app (so search a large Japanese dictionary file). However, it (or at least something that must be very much related). At first I suspected RealBasic or AppleScript/AppleEvent handling under OS 8.5.1, but it turned out to be reproducible in MacPerl. Essentially, what happens is, that after I delete a comment line (!), the second line of my script, MacPerl crashes when I try to run the script. When I send the script without the comment line via AE the system freezes irrecoverably. When I insert the comment, I no longer experience any problems. (BTW, the script is read from a TEXT resource by the RealBasic app.) Since I am using a German OS 8.5.1 plus a Japanese Language Kit (and the most recent MacPerl 5.2.0r4) it might be related to that. I do not experience any trouble under a German 8.1 without the JLK. Furthermore, the script ran without problems before I upgraded from 8.1 with JLK to 8.5.1. Although Japanese characters are involved in the script, it can be tested by anybody, since without arguments it should just exit and do nothing. It should not, however, crash MacPerl or freeze the system. I tried to check the script in a hex editor to make sure that it does not contain any strange non printables, but could not detect anything. I will send the script to anybody who wants to give it a try.
