[MacPerl] beginner needs book recommendation and advice

Hi,

I think I have the right mailing list address...

Anyway, here's the situation. I'm new to programming, but I have had no
difficulties whatsoever. A possible job opportunity has come up for me
that is my perfect dream job. The only thing is, they want perl, and I
don't have it. As things turn out, I have some time and I want to get
this sucker licked. (Notice the pun).

I need to know what's the best way to go about learning perl. Can
anyone recommend a book? I looked on barnesandnoble.com and there's a
ton of them. I need something for a beginner perl programmer who picks
up things pretty quickly.

Or, are there any recommended tutorials on the net? I looked at the
perl faq and macperl faq and the perl primer, but they all seem to
assume some kind of prior knowledge. I do plan on looking into those
sights in more depth (but I'm short on time - I'm working full time,
taking 3 classes, job hunting, and now this!)

Any help would be greatly appreciated and now that I think about it, if
there's anyone on the list in or near Boston, I'd be interested in
hiring a tutor.

Thanks,
Rob Leach
