It's not a particularly lightweight solution, but my digital camera became a
lot more useful after I started using GraphicBrowser, by Takeshi Kodama.

It creates image previews on demand, or automatically when you open a folder
in Browser view.  This functionality does not appear to be exposed by the
scripting interface.

I actually found it kind of annoying, until I found out that I strip the
previews, by nuking the resource fork, with folder actions.
