Found I could change the color by fiddling with line 44:

    RGBForeColor(new RGBColor(16384, 16384, $shade));

Makes it a super-intelligent shade of blue.

Seems to work better when MacPerl is the frontmost app, better still when 
MacPerl is the ONLY app.  Doesn't work from BBEdit (my normal mode of 
operation) alas.
