You mean the removeal of the "#", or of the whole entire sequence "
"# while ($next_record = <FH>)"? If only the "#", the whole nature of
the would-be statement changes, from a block to an impossible statement
with a modifier. Are you sure you didn't want a "do" in front of that
block?

Tip from an oldbie (;-): if you get some of those strange effects on the
nature of reports on syntax errors, check you block structures.
