[MacPerl] Compiled script priority under MacOS

I've a compiled script running under Mac Os 8.6 that I wish to run all the time in the background.
Is there a way to set a low priority for it so it does not take much CPU time?
At the moment I have a loop with a long delay in it but I can still 'feel' the application slowing down the computer.

Thanks,

  Peter.
