I was having hanging/stalling problems with MacPerl upon launching MacPerl. When I launched MacPerl, the system would become unresponsive for 20 seconds or so. After that time period, the system (and MacPerl) would begin to respond. However, MacPerl was still quite sluggish, taking several seconds to open and run simple scripts. Dan Holtz was having similar problems with his system, and I spotted his post on DejaNews and this mailing list. We exchanged some email concerning this issue. After trying some troubleshooting, I found that AppleTalk was active with no network present. If an AppleTalk network is present (in my case, ethernet to my old PowerBook), MacPerl doesn't stall the system upon launching, and is as responsive as before. However, if there is no network present, and AppleTalk is active, MacPerl and the system become unresponsive for about half a minute after launching MacPerl. After MacPerl begins responding, performance is sluggish. Deactivating AppleTalk through the Chooser cures the problem. Hope this helps anyone with similar problems!
