thanks Don and Paul.  I am new to perl, and I wrote that script to save time
because I had 70 filenames to change.  One hour later, my code still did not
work.  I was doubting whether perl would save me time, but now I know that
in the long run it certainly will.  It was worth it to work the code until
it was fixed.
