I forwarded this to Wilfredo Sanchez, who is the tech lead of the UNIX-in-Mac OS X and with whom I have been working to get Perl working in Mac OS X. Last I heard he didn't have any big squabbles (*), Perl 5.6.0 worked just fine as far as I know.
