Consider the scripting capability of Apple's MPW - Macintosh Programmer's Workshop - now free from Apple. You get to use perl's ARGV[x] and you can also do the things you want to do with folders. Instead of an AppleScript it will be an MPW toolserver script.

Besides that we all hope MacPerl will operate with a real shell under MacOS exx so you'll be ready to go.
