I am currrently running on a G3 (firewire) Powerbook and I've never
had any problems installing. I don't know what the 1008:17 is but a
-23 is an openErr. Which means it has trouble opening something (the
archive?).

Without knowing what the exact error is, I'd say do the normal
things. Try downloading again (try getting the hqx version if you
used the bin version), try doing it with extensions disabled, etc.

BTW: Nothing is installed in the system folder, so once expanded
MacPerl can be dragged from machine to machine. So, if all else
fails, expand it somewhere else, then drag it over.
