[MacPerl] using System with Mac Perl

I'd like to use system to launch a Mac app then continue the Perl script 
once the app is done.

System looks fairly straightforward, but I'm unable to get it to launch an
app.

I'm doing something like this:

system ("HD:some application");

Any suggestions on how to use System with Mac Perl would be appreciated. I'm
probably missing something really basic.
