[MacPerl] A new MacPerl maintainer for a new Millennium

MacPerl users,

I'm leaving for a holiday tonight, so I'm going to give you a few days' advance
notice: Effective midnight January 1, 2001, I'm going to retire as MacPerl
maintainer. Chris Nandor has graciously volunteered to take over (and the fact
that he lives on the East coast is going to give us a nice 3 hours of overlap
of our midnights :-)

I believe the time is right for this transition because of a combination of
factors:

 - I now have a 5.6 port on sourceforge that is very close to building
reproducibly, with both Codewarrior and the free MPW compilers, and I've
considered that an essential condition for a decent transition.
 - I'm no longer sufficently interested in the MacPerl core to go through
the countless test cases and polish up dialogs (let alone doing substantial
revisions to the application). At the same time, I could not in good
conscience work on stuff that *does* interest me (like the Toolbox
interfaces) with MacPerl in an unreleased state.
 - I've maintained MacPerl for the last millennium, and I don't want my job to
drag out into the next one :-)

My retirement does not mean that a big sailing ship with grey sails is going to
carry me to the Western Lands (and, although I'm leaving for a holiday in Las
Vegas, rumors that I've been offered a Perl lounge act are entirely
unsubstantiated). I plan to keep maintaining and enhancing GUSI actively, and
I'm certainly going to help out with the transition, porting, and mailing list
migration. I also plan to keep on doing work on (mac)perl, in particular
integrating my xsubpp enhancements in the core and MacOS X toolbox interfaces.

I would like to thank all the people whose comments and contributions have made
maintaining MacPerl such a rewarding task, in particular Chris Nandor, Vicki
Brown, and Rich Morin.

Matthias
