I'm pretty sure there was a perl4 version of MacPerl, so it wouldn't have formline (being perl4) and couldn't fork or pipe (being on a Mac), so the temp file solution would be the only way to go. Of course perl5 has formline so there's no reason I can see to do either a fork, temp file, or "secret passage", unless you *really* want to support older perls.
