I'm something of a newbie myself (two months or so) and things are
just begining to make sense to me, so who am I to contradict this
sage counsel, but, having read both the above, let me suggest the
original questioner try 'man perl'. There's a ton of really great
information just sitting there waiting to be read.

Also, not to suck up to anyone here in North Colorado, I think very
highly of Christiansen & Torkington's "The Perl Cookbook."
