Let me second this. Learning Perl (the Llama book) is a must if you are starting out fresh. Get Programing Perl (the Camel book) while you are buying because you will need it someday (it is THE difinative paper reference but the info comes fast a furious and the basics can be obscured, thus the Llama book).
