I would recommend a good C programming class.
( C is harder than Perl, but I am not sure
  of any cost effective Perl classes, per se.)

Then, I would just walk thru scripts over and over
til there was no doubt about what it did and how,
then move on.

There really isn't any easy way to learn
something so worthwhile...

I've been learning perl for three years and I
am definitely a beginner (mainly because I can't
stop some parts of my daily life - not even for perl.)
