Thanks for your post, I've being longing for a FWP type to give me an
opinion on Ruby. (I'm a bit snowed under with new baby etc. etc. or I'd
try it out myself.)

I like Perl, but came across Python second (I'm a bit of language
collector...). In retrospect I suspect if I came across them
simultaneously I would have chosen Python for its cleanness and better
fitting object system. 

But having Perl in that niche already I haven't really felt the urge
to take on Python as well, too little advantage and several
disadvantages.

Questions: Does Ruby have some clean lambda / block / anonymous
function facility to allow functional language type tricks?  

Does it have Lazy evaluated parameters?

Does it have Scheme like promises?  

And lets face it, the main reason we use perl is for the regexp
engine. Does Ruby's regexp engine compare?

Is there a CPAN like infrastructure starting up?
